Hiroshi Nakayama Sculptural Tile #5 – Twilight Glow Glaze

Two sweeping ridges converge near the lower left corner of this sculptural stoneware tile by Hiroshi Nakayama, opening into broad, angled surfaces that extend toward the top and right edges. The deep recess between them creates a dramatic interplay of light and shadow, while the flowing contours soften the composition's strong diagonal movement. Small impressed details in opposite corners add a quieter counterpoint to the larger forms.

The tile is finished with Nakayama's distinctive Twilight Glow glaze. Its finely textured, silvery surface reveals shifting shades of blue, violet, and green, with brighter highlights gathering along the raised edges and deeper tones settling into the recessed areas.

Nakayama developed Twilight Glow to produce colors that change with the light source, its intensity, and the viewing angle. The effect results from light interference in the outermost layer of the glaze.

Display: May be displayed upright on a suitable stand. Indirect natural light is ideal for revealing the glaze's shifting colors. Alternatively, use lighting with a color temperature of 5,000K or higher.

Care: Fingerprints may be removed with alcohol. For more thorough cleaning, gently scrub with a soft brush and mild detergent, rinse with water, and allow to air dry.

Hiroshi Nakayamaによるこの陶板レリーフ作品では、左下付近で二つの大きな稜線が合流し、そこから上方と右側へ向かって広がっています。稜線の間に生まれた深いくぼみが光と影の鮮やかな対比をつくり、流れるような曲面が、斜めに走る力強い構成に柔らかさを与えています。対角に位置する二つの隅には小さな印刻模様があり、大きな起伏にさりげないアクセントを添えています。

表面には、Nakayama独自の「Twilight Glow」釉薬が施されています。細かな質感をもつ銀色の表面には、青、紫、緑がほのかに浮かび上がり、盛り上がった稜線には明るい輝きが、深くくぼんだ部分には濃い色合いが現れます。

「Twilight Glow」は、光源や光の強さ、見る角度によって色彩が変化するよう、Nakayamaが開発した釉薬です。この効果は、釉薬の最表層で起こる光の干渉によって生まれます。
