Hiroshi Nakayama Sculptural Tile #8 (Enso Zen Circle) – Silent Patina Glaze

$100.00

An open Enso Zen circle occupies the center of this small sculptural stoneware tile by Hiroshi Nakayama. Formed from closely packed, rounded impressions, the pale, textured ring stands out against a darker field of repeating circular marks. The contrast between the two surfaces gives the simple composition an unexpected intricacy, while the incomplete circle retains an expressive, irregular character.

The tile is finished with Nakayama's Silent Patina glaze, whose metallic surface combines bronze, coppery gold, and muted gray. Under different lighting, cooler blue-gray tones emerge among the warmer colors. The varied surface textures and subtle shifts in color give the piece a weathered, layered appearance.

The Enso, or Zen circle, is a familiar form in Japanese Zen art, traditionally associated with the expressive gesture of drawing a circle. Here, Nakayama explores that form through ceramic texture and contrasting surfaces rather than brushwork.

Material: High-fire stoneware, Silent Patina glaze.

Display: May be displayed flat or upright on a suitable stand. The metallic surface reveals different colors and textures under changing light.

Hiroshi Nakayama
