Andy Vlock Gas-Fired Sashimi Plate — Wood Ash and Black Dolomite Glaze

This sashimi plate by Andy Vlock is handbuilt from stoneware and gas fired in reduction, finished with a layered surface of wood ash and black dolomite glaze. The glaze breaks and pools across the plate, producing rich variations of deep brown, charcoal, and lighter ash-toned highlights that reflect the movement of flame during firing.

The form is gently elongated, with both ends subtly lifted, creating a shallow cradle that feels intentional and balanced. This upward curve adds visual rhythm while helping to frame food or objects placed on the surface. The rim and edges retain a hand-formed quality, giving the plate a tactile warmth and a quiet sense of motion.

Measuring approximately 7 inches long and 5 inches wide, with the ends rising about 1.5 inches, this plate is well suited for sashimi, small composed dishes, appetizers, or sweets. It also works beautifully as a catch-all plate or display piece, bringing a grounded, earthy presence to the table.
