Brandon Hale Wood-Fired Matcha Tea Bowl – Shino Interior

This wheel-thrown stoneware matcha bowl by Brandon Hale has a gently rounded body, nearly straight upper walls, and a softly defined rim. Its unglazed exterior reveals warm reddish-brown clay, with broad patches of ochre, subtle throwing lines, and scattered markings from a three-day wood-firing. Inside, Shino glaze creates a deeper surface of rust brown and smoky gray, while pale, speckled tones gather around the rim. The contrast between the earthy exterior and glazed interior gives the bowl a rich but restrained character, inviting close attention during the preparation and enjoyment of matcha.

Brandon Haleによる、ろくろ成形の炻器の抹茶碗。柔らかな丸みのある胴と、ほぼまっすぐに立ち上がる側面、穏やかな口縁が特徴です。外側には釉薬を施さず、3日間の薪窯焼成によって、赤褐色の土肌に黄土色の大きな斑や、かすかなろくろ目、焼成による細かな痕跡が現れています。内側には志野釉が施され、深い赤茶色から煙を思わせる灰色へと変化し、口縁には淡い斑点模様が広がります。素朴な土肌と釉薬の深みのある表情が対照をなし、抹茶を点て、味わう時間の中で、細部まで眺めたくなる器です。
