Brandon Hale Wood-Fired Tumbler – Shino Glaze

This wheel-thrown stoneware tumbler by Brandon Hale has a generous, gently rounded cylindrical form, with a subtle narrowing through the middle and a softly defined rim. Fired for three days in a wood kiln, its Shino glaze reveals remarkable variations across the surface. Pale cream and muted greenish tones, marked by fine crackling and scattered dark speckles, give way to warm ochre, rust red, and deep brown. The transitions are irregular and richly textured, with each turn of the vessel revealing a different aspect of the firing. Inside, deep reddish-brown tones and darker horizontal bands provide a striking contrast to the lighter exterior. A substantial, inviting cup whose simple form allows the complexity of its surface to take center stage.
