Chinatsu Nagamune Hand-Dyed Indigo Katazome Wall Hanging – Fields No. 1

Hand-dyed with indigo on ramie, this wall hanging by Chinatsu Nagamune uses katazome rice-paste resist to build a layered composition of overlapping rectangular forms. Pale blue, cream, and deep indigo areas shift across one another, while fine horizontal, vertical, and diagonal line patterns create changes in density and direction throughout the piece.

The composition suggests an arrangement of fields or plots without becoming literal. Broad translucent-looking passages sit beside denser patterned sections, and the open weave of the ramie gives the dyed surface a lightness that softens the geometry. The result is structured but not rigid, with small variations in line, edge, and color keeping the surface active.
