Guy Matsuda Wood-Fired River Stone Sculpture

Hand-built by Guy Matsuda, this wood-fired stoneware sculpture takes its inspiration from the rounded forms of river stones. Its compact, gently irregular shape invites being viewed from different angles, each revealing a different relationship between surface, texture, and form. A pale spodumene glaze sweeps across areas of warm, unglazed clay, while a section of closely spaced, incised lines introduces a contrasting texture. Fine speckling and subtle variations in color and sheen reflect the effects of wood firing. With its softened edges and quietly substantial presence, this piece brings something of the character of a river-worn stone into the home. An engaging object to hold, turn, and contemplate, or simply to enjoy on a shelf or table.
Approximately 4.5" high × 5" wide.
