Guy Matsuda Wood-Fired Vase with Shell Imprints

Wheel-thrown by Guy Matsuda, this wood-fired stoneware vase has a gently elongated body, rounded shoulders, and a narrow neck with a softly flared rim. The unglazed surface reveals warm sandy tones, with subtle shifts from pale cream to soft pink and reddish brown created by the wood firing. Diagonal rope impressions cross the lower body, creating a finely textured pattern, while small shell imprints near the base add another layer of detail. The contrast between the smooth upper surface and the rhythmic markings below gives the vase its distinctive character. Its narrow opening makes it particularly well suited to arrangements of branches, dried grasses, or a few seasonal flowers, while its graceful form and richly textured surface are equally engaging on their own.

ガイ・マツダがろくろで成形し、薪窯で焼成した炻器製の花器。やや縦長のふっくらとした胴、丸みのある肩、わずかに外側へ広がる口縁を持つ細い首が特徴です。釉薬を掛けていない表面には、淡い乳白色からやわらかな桃色、赤褐色へと移り変わるあたたかな土の色合いが現れ、薪窯での焼成による微妙な変化が楽しめます。胴の下部には縄を押し当てた斜めの細かな模様が広がり、底に近い部分には貝殻の跡が残されています。なめらかな上部と、リズミカルな模様が刻まれた下部との対比が、この花器ならではの表情を生み出しています。細い口元は枝ものやドライフラワー、季節の草花を数本生けるのに適しており、何も生けずにそのまま置いても、優美な形と豊かな土の質感を楽しめます。
