Hiroshi Nakayama Sculptural Tile #4 – Twilight Glow Glaze

Three connected rings of increasing size travel diagonally across this sculptural ceramic tile by Hiroshi Nakayama. Their rounded, raised edges surround shallow recessed centers, creating a rhythmic progression of circular forms. The smooth curves contrast with the finely speckled background, while small irregularities in the surface and corners add further visual interest.

Made from high-fire stoneware, the tile is finished with Nakayama's distinctive Twilight Glow glaze. Predominantly silvery gray, the surface reveals shifting shades of blue, violet, green, and touches of gold. The raised rings catch the light along their edges, while their recessed centers appear darker, emphasizing the sculptural depth of the composition.

Nakayama developed Twilight Glow to produce colors that change with the light source, its intensity, and the viewing angle. The effect results from light interference in the outermost layer of the glaze.

Display: May be displayed upright on a suitable stand, in any orientation. Indirect natural light is ideal for revealing the glaze's shifting colors. Alternatively, use lighting with a color temperature of 5,000K or higher.

Care: Fingerprints may be removed with alcohol. For more thorough cleaning, gently scrub with a soft brush and mild detergent, rinse with water, and allow to air dry.

高火度焼成のストーンウェアには、Nakayama独自の「Twilight Glow」釉薬が施されています。銀灰色を基調としながら、青、紫、緑、そしてところどころに金色の輝きが現れます。盛り上がった輪の縁は光を受けて明るく輝き、くぼんだ中心には深い陰影が生まれ、レリーフの立体感を際立たせています。

「Twilight Glow」は、光源や光の強さ、見る角度によって色彩が変化するよう、Nakayamaが開発した釉薬です。この効果は、釉薬の最表層で起こる光の干渉によって生まれます。
