Guy Matsuda Square Serving Bowl with Brushwork

Wheel-thrown by Guy Matsuda, this stoneware serving bowl has a softly rounded body that opens into a gently squared rim, bringing an unexpected angular quality to its otherwise flowing form. The unglazed exterior reveals warm sandy tones and fine speckling, while a shino glaze gives the interior a rich, earthy brown surface. Bold, geometric brushwork in dark iron wash adds a playful rhythm around the outside, each motif combining strong lines with smaller, freely placed marks. The contrast between the rounded body, squared opening, and lively decoration gives the bowl its distinctive character. Its generous depth makes it well suited to serving salads, vegetables, fruit, or shared dishes, while its unusual form and expressive brushwork also invite display.
