Guy Matsuda Chattermark Vase – Wood & Salt Fired Stoneware

This vase by Guy Matsuda holds stillness and motion in perfect balance. Thrown from BMix stoneware and left unglazed, it was fired with wood and salt, allowing flame, vapor, and surface to co-create its finish. A field of fine vertical chattermarks, carved while the clay was still rotating on the wheel, gives the piece a subtle texture—like wind combing through grass. Hints of ivory, blush, and ash-gray shift across the surface depending on the light. The form is full yet composed, grounded by a narrow foot and gently gathered at the rim. Quietly monumental.

ガイ・マツダによるこの壺は、静けさと動きをひとつに宿しています。BMixストーンウェア粘土を用い、釉薬をかけずに薪と塩で焼成されたことで、炎と蒸気が自然に器肌を描き出しています。轆轤の回転中に刻まれた「チャターマーク（揺れ模様）」が、器全体にさざ波のような繊細な質感をもたらし、まるで風に揺れる草原のような印象。光の加減によって、象牙色からほのかな紅、灰色が揺らめきます。豊かな膨らみをもちつつ、すっきりとまとまった形は、高台の安定感と口縁の引き締まりが美しく調和しています。
