Meet Chinatsu Nagamune of Codo Experiment

Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, Chinatsu Nagamune is an textile artist now living in Leverett, Massachusetts. Her work is rooted in the Japanese tradition of Ai Katazome, a rice-resist dyeing technique that uses hand-carved stencils and indigo dye to create intricate patterns on fabric. Chinatsu’s artistry blends traditional techniques with a thoughtful, experimental approach that incorporates materials and influences from all parts of her life. She sources fabrics and dyes that tell a story—vintage fabrics, handwoven cotton from Oaxaca, and indigo grown in her garden or sourced from India and the United States—layering her own narrative onto these materials with reverence.

Chinatsu’s fascination with indigo began in childhood when she was drawn to the textured, weathered beauty of antique indigo-dyed cloth.
