Brandon Hale Anagama Fired Mt Fuji Matcha Bowl

This matcha bowl by Brandon Hale was wheel-thrown from a custom stoneware blend enriched with crushed sandstone from Mt. Sugarloaf, a local landmark near Brandon’s studio. Black and white slips were layered across the surface, then the piece was placed in an anagama kiln for an extended wood firing. The result is a bowl with striking contrast—molten white ash cascading down over dark, textured clay, evoking the snow-capped silhouette of Mt. Fuji.

Brandon calls it “Mount Sugarloaf dressed up as Mount Fuji.” Whatever the name, it’s a bold, charismatic chawan with a rich interior glaze and a complex, powerful foot.

ブランダン・ヘイルが地元マウント・シュガーローフの砂岩を加えた特製の陶土で成形し、黒化粧土と白化粧土を重ね、薪窯（穴窯）で焼成した抹茶碗です。焼成によって白い灰が器の上部に厚く降り積もり、下部の濃色とのコントラストが、まるで雪をかぶった富士山のような姿を描き出しています。

作り手はこの碗を「富士山の仮装をしたシュガーローフ山」と呼んでいますが、そのユーモアの奥には、素材と火が織りなす真摯な表現が宿っています。見応えのある高台、奥深い釉調の内部、美しさと力強さを兼ね備えた一品です。
