Brandon Hale Large Vase with Black Slip and Wood Ash

This large vase by Brandon Hale is wheel thrown from wild clay and finished with black slip and wood ash, then electric fired. The form is quietly confident—broad at the shoulder, tapering to a stable base, with a narrow opening that gathers and holds whatever is placed within.

Across the surface, the interaction of slip and ash creates a soft, atmospheric field: smoky grays, deepened blacks, and subtle mineral blooms that seem to settle and drift across the curve of the vessel. One area gathers more intensity, where the ash has pooled and moved, leaving a trace of motion that feels almost like weather passing over a landscape.

Equally at home holding a few branches, a single stem, or standing on its own, the piece carries a sense of weight and stillness that anchors a space.
