Meet Deb Luekens

Deb Luekens was born in Sapporo and raised in Japan, later moving to Tokyo for junior high and high school before coming to the United States for college. She has lived in the U.S. since then, and throughout her life has felt a deep need to work with her hands, experimenting across materials and forms as a way of thinking and making.

Continually drawn to the aesthetics of Japan, Deb often incorporates traditional Japanese fabrics and handmade papers—particularly chirimen textiles and yuzen washi (also known as chiyogami)—into her work. After retiring from a career in social work, she now spends much of her time working in her home studio in Northampton, Massachusetts, overlooking a river whose constant motion is a daily source of calm and inspiration. She regularly returns to Japan, carrying those experiences back into her evolving practice.

デブ・ルーケンズは札幌に生まれ、日本で育ちました。中学・高校時代を東京で過ごした後、大学進学のために渡米し、それ以来アメリカを拠点に制作を続けています。幼い頃から手を動かして何かをつくることに強く惹かれ、素材や表現方法を探りながら制作することが、彼女にとって自然な思考のかたちでした。

日本の美意識に深く心を寄せ続けており、作品には縮緬（ちりめん）などの日本の伝統的な布や、友禅和紙（千代紙）といった手漉き和紙を取り入れることが多くあります。ソーシャルワークの仕事を退いた現在は、マサチューセッツ州ノーサンプトンの自宅スタジオで制作に向き合い、窓の外を流れる川の絶え間ない動きを日々の静かなインスピレーションとしています。日本への定期的な帰郷も、次なる制作への大切な源となっています。
