Meet Silene DeCiucies

Silene DeCiucies began making pottery in college and shaped her path not through formal classes, but through hands-on learning—working as a studio assistant and engaging in work trades with experienced potters. These immersive experiences, particularly assisting a production potter and firing with wood kilns in upstate New York, gave her a deep grounding in process, discipline, and the expressive potential of form and surface. A pivotal encounter with reduction-cooled pottery at the Old Church Pottery Show led her to a more formal assistantship in the Syracuse area, where she deepened her understanding of wood firing, received critical feedback, and even helped build a kiln. She credits each of her mentors with influencing the direction of her work.

Silene’s pots are quiet, grounded, and meant to be lived with. While not directly connected to the Japanese ceramic tradition, she shares an affinity for understated forms and surfaces that let their contents shine. Her intention is simple and deeply felt: to make beautiful utilitarian objects that become part of someone’s daily rhythms. She finds joy in the physical labor of pottery, the creative constraints of material and fire, and the alchemy of the kiln—though, like many potters, she wishes there were more hours in the day. Of her recent work, she finds herself especially drawn to her moody white bowls—pieces that hold mystery while remaining deeply functional.

Silene DeCiucies（シリーン・デシューシーズ）は大学時代に陶芸を始め、正式なクラスではなく、スタジオアシスタントやワークトレードを通じて実践的に学んできました。ニューヨーク州北部での量産陶芸家のアシスタント経験や薪窯での焼成などを通して、彼女は形や表面に宿る表現力、そしてプロセスの大切さを深く学びました。ニュージャージー州で開催されたOld Church Pottery Showで還元冷却の作品に出会ったことが転機となり、シラキュース地域での正式なアシスタントシップに応募。ここで、薪窯についてさらに理解を深め、作品に対するフィードバックを受け、自身の作陶を深めていきました。この期間には、師匠の一人と共に窯の建設にも携わるという貴重な経験も得ました。彼女は、出会ったすべての師からの影響に感謝しています。

シリーンの器は、静かで落ち着いた佇まいをもち、日常に自然に寄り添います。日本の陶芸に直接の系譜はないものの、自己主張せず中身を引き立てる器や、控えめな表情に惹かれる美意識には、日本の美学との共鳴が感じられます。彼女の作陶の意図は、日々の暮らしの一部として使われ、美しさと実用性を兼ね備えた器を作ること。素材と焼成法の制約の中で創造性を発揮し、窯の魔法を楽しみながら制作を続けています。時間の制約は課題ですが、最近は「ムーディーな白」のボウルに特に愛着を感じているそうです。静けさと深みを兼ね備えた、日常に寄り添う器です。
