Guy Matsuda Wood-Fired Lidded Jar (Unglazed)

This lidded jar by Guy Matsuda is defined by its quiet, elemental presence, its rounded form gently enclosed by a softly fitted lid. The proportions feel balanced and self-contained, offering a sense of calm and inward focus.

Wheel thrown in stoneware and wood-fired, the surface is left unglazed, allowing the natural character of the clay to fully emerge. Subtle bands of warm orange, soft beige, and pale ash tones move horizontally across the form, echoing both the rotation of the wheel and the shifting atmosphere of the kiln. Fine speckling and gentle flashing record the path of flame, creating a surface that feels both natural and deeply considered.

Without additional decoration, the piece emphasizes material and process—clay, fire, and time. The lid continues the curve of the body, creating a unified silhouette that feels complete and resolved.

The interior is unglazed, making it well suited for storing dry goods such as tea, spices, or small objects.

薪窯で焼成されたGuy Matsudaの蓋物。丸みのある胴体にやわらかく収まる蓋が重なり、静かで内に向かうような佇まいを感じさせます。全体のバランスがよく、落ち着いたまとまりのある形です。

石器のろくろ成形による本体は無釉で仕上げられ、土そのものの質感と、薪窯による炎や灰の作用がそのまま表面に現れています。橙色や淡いベージュ、灰の景色が帯のように重なり合い、ろくろの回転と焼成中の変化が静かに映し出されています。細やかな斑点やわずかな色の揺らぎが、火の動きを感じさせます。

装飾を加えないことで、素材と焼成のプロセスそのものが前面に現れ、土と火、時間の関係がより明確に感じられる一点です。蓋は胴体の曲線に自然に続き、全体としてひとつのまとまりのあるかたちをつくっています。

内側も無釉で、茶葉や香辛料、小物など、乾いたものを収める器として適しています。
