Handcrafted by Akemi Rice using the traditional ikkanbari technique, this one-of-a-kind handbag brings together repurposed basketry, handmade washi, vintage Japanese papers, and woodblock-print imagery. Each layer is brushed, glued, and burnished entirely by hand, creating a richly textured surface that carries the quiet patina of time.
This Ikkanbari handbag by Akemi Rice is built on a repurposed basket form and layered with handmade paper, vintage kimono fabric, and fragments of aged family notes. The surface is finished with persimmon lacquer, which adds strength, durability, and a warm, softly burnished sheen. Kimono sash handles complete the piece, lending both comfort and a sense of continuity with the materials used throughout. Rich in texture and history, this handbag functions as a practical carry piece while also standing as a deeply personal, one-of-a-kind object.
