Brandon Hale Hand-Built Vase with Laterite Slip

This hand-built vase by Brandon Hale is formed using the kurinuki technique, carved from a solid block of wild clay and shaped through removal rather than addition. The result is a form that feels discovered as much as made—irregular, grounded, and quietly alive in the hand.

The surface is finished with laterite slip and wood and salt firing, creating a richly textured skin of soft grays, earthen browns, and subtle mineral variation. The exterior retains the marks of carving and touch, with ridges, planes, and small fissures that catch the light and invite close attention.

Its narrow opening naturally supports a single stem or a small, spare arrangement, making it especially suited to quiet, intentional placement—a single flower, a branch, or simply the presence of the vessel itself.

Brandon Haleによる手びねりの花器。塊の土を削り出して成形する「くり抜き（くりぬき）」技法により作られています。付け加えるのではなく削り出すことで形が現れ、どこか発見されたような、自然で静かな存在感を持ちます。

表面にはラテライトの化粧土が施され、薪と塩による焼成によって、やわらかな灰色や土色、鉱物的な変化が現れています。削り跡や凹凸、細かなひびの表情が光を受け、手の痕跡を感じさせます。

口元は小さく、一輪の花や枝をそっと支えるのに適しており、控えめで静かな佇まいを空間にもたらします。
