Brandon Hale Kintsugi Repaired White Chawan

Wheel-thrown chawan by Brandon Hale made from stoneware with natural pink sandstone inclusions gathered from Mt. Sugarloaf, a landmark peak in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. The bowl is finished with a soft white slip and clear glaze, revealing both the warmth of the clay and the subtle mineral traces within it.

During firing, the sandstone inclusions create gentle tonal variations and small natural marks across the surface. These quiet details give the bowl a sense of geological presence—connecting the object to the local landscape from which its materials were gathered.

This particular bowl arrived with three small rim chips, which were carefully repaired in-house using a food-safe kintsugi technique. The repairs appear as small golden accents along the rim, transforming what might have been flaws into moments of attention and care. In keeping with the spirit of kintsugi, the bowl’s history becomes part of its beauty.

Comfortably sized for matcha but equally suited to rice, soup, or dessert, the bowl has a generous interior and a stable foot that feels balanced in the hands.

Brandon Haleによる抹茶碗。マサチューセッツ州西部パイオニアバレーのランドマークであるシュガーローフ山で採取されたピンク色の砂岩粒子を含むストーンウェア土を用いて、ろくろで成形されています。表面には白化粧土と透明釉が施され、土の温かみと鉱物の痕跡がやわらかく現れています。

焼成の過程で砂岩の粒子が自然な斑点や色調の変化を生み、器の表面に静かな表情を与えています。こうした細かな痕跡が、器を土地の地質と結びつけるような感覚をもたらします。

この碗は到着時に縁に三か所の小さな欠けがありましたが、当店にて食品用安全の金継ぎ技法で丁寧に修復しました。縁に見える小さな金色の補修跡は、欠けを隠すのではなく、その歴史を器の美しさの一部として受け入れる金継ぎの精神を体現しています。

抹茶碗として心地よいサイズでありながら、ご飯やスープ、デザートなどにも使いやすい形です。手に取ったときに安定感のある高台があり、日常の食卓でも自然に馴染みます。
