Brandon Hale Matcha Bowl with Shino Glaze

This matcha bowl by Brandon Hale is wheel thrown from wild clay and finished with black slip and a layered shino glaze, then fired first electrically and again in a wood and soda atmosphere. The multiple firings bring depth and movement to the surface, where ash, flame, and glaze interact in complex and unpredictable ways.

The surface shows areas of crawling in the glaze—subtle separations that create a network of textures and tonal variation. These marks are purely visual, a natural result of the firing process, and do not affect the strength or integrity of the bowl. Instead, they contribute to a surface that feels active and alive, with shifts from pale, mineral whites to smoky grays and deeper, shadowed interiors.

The form sits comfortably in the hands, with a slightly irregular rim and a generous interior suited to whisking matcha or serving tea more informally. It invites both use and close looking, its surface revealing new details over time.

Brandon Haleによる抹茶碗。野生の土を用いて轆轤で成形され、黒化粧土と志野釉が施されています。その後、電気窯での焼成に加え、薪とソーダによる再焼成が行われ、炎や灰、釉薬が重なり合うことで奥行きのある表情が生まれています。

表面には釉薬の縮れ（クロール）が見られ、ひびのようにも見える独特の質感をつくり出しています。これは焼成による自然な現象であり、器の強度や使用には影響しません。むしろ、白や灰色、深い陰影へと移ろう表情に豊かな変化を与えています。

手にしっくりと収まる形状で、やや不均一な口縁とゆとりある内部は、抹茶を点てる際にも、日常の茶の器としても心地よく使えます。
