Brandon Hale Black Slip Serving Plate

Substantial serving plate by Brandon Hale, wheel thrown in stoneware and finished with black slip and ash in an electric firing. The piece reflects Hale’s engagement with traditional Japanese studio pottery, particularly the influence of Shoji Hamada, beginning with the physically demanding process of pounding the center of the clay before lifting the walls on the wheel.

The plate rests on four small rectangular feet arranged in a square beneath the form, creating a quiet architectural structure that supports the broad circular dish above. Along the rim, subtle triangular alterations interrupt the round edge, giving the piece a gentle rhythm and a sense of movement when viewed from different angles.

The surface carries a deep charcoal tone with soft blue-black and silvery variations where ash has interacted with the slip during firing. Inside the bowl-like center, traces of throwing lines and natural firing effects create a landscape-like field that feels both tactile and atmospheric.

At over three pounds, the plate has a satisfying weight and presence, making it especially well suited as a serving piece for shared dishes—vegetables, roasted fish, salads, or seasonal fruit. It also works beautifully as a centerpiece or presentation plate.

この器は四つの小さな長方形の脚で支えられており、その脚が正方形に配置されることで、上に広がる円形の皿とのあいだに静かな構造的リズムが生まれています。縁には三角形のゆるやかな歪みが加えられ、完全な円をわずかに崩すことで、見る角度によって表情が変化します。

表面は深いチャコール色で、灰とスリップの作用によって青みを帯びた黒や銀色のニュアンスが現れています。中央にはろくろ目がうっすらと残り、焼成による自然な変化とともに風景のような奥行きを感じさせます。

重さがあり安定感のある器で、野菜料理、魚料理、サラダ、果物などを盛り付けるサービングプレートとして特に活躍します。食卓の中心に置かれる器としても美しい存在感を持っています。
