Brandon Hale Sugarloaf Stone Tea Bowl (Chawan)

Large chawan by Brandon Hale, wheel thrown in stoneware and finished with white slip and a clear glaze in an electric firing. The clay body includes pink sandstone inclusions gathered from Mt. Sugarloaf, a landmark peak in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, giving the bowl a subtle connection to the local landscape.

The form is gently cylindrical with softly irregular walls and a slightly undulating rim. Beneath the white slip, the surface retains the tactile evidence of the throwing process, while small mineral inclusions occasionally emerge through the glaze as dark specks and natural marks.

The clear glaze allows the quiet variations of the slip and clay to remain visible, creating a soft, luminous white surface with subtle warmth and depth. The result is a bowl that feels both grounded and refined, with a calm presence in the hand.

Generously sized for matcha preparation, the bowl also works beautifully for tea, small servings of rice, desserts, or seasonal fruit.

Brandon Haleによる大ぶりの茶碗。石器土をろくろ成形し、白いスリップを施した上に透明釉をかけて電気窯で焼成されています。土には、マサチューセッツ州パイオニア・バレーのランドマークであるシュガーローフ山から採取されたピンク色の砂岩が含まれており、土地の風景とのつながりを感じさせます。

やや円筒形のやわらかなフォルムで、縁にはわずかな揺らぎがあります。白いスリップの下にはろくろの動きが感じられ、釉薬の下からは鉱物の小さな粒子が時折現れ、自然な表情をつくり出しています。

透明釉によって、スリップと土の微妙な色合いがそのまま生かされ、やわらかく奥行きのある白い表情が生まれています。手に持ったときに落ち着いた存在感を感じさせる器です。

抹茶碗として十分なサイズがあり、抹茶のほか、お茶、ご飯、デザート、果物などにも美しく使うことができます。
