Brandon Hale Wood-Fired Small Tea Cup

This small tea cup by Brandon Hale is wheel thrown from wild clay and wood fired with soda, creating a surface that feels shaped as much by flame and ash as by the potter's hand. A soft white slip provides a quiet canvas for the kiln's natural markings, where warm earth tones, charcoal, and subtle olive hues settle unpredictably across the form.

One side of the cup evokes the silhouette of a mountain at sunrise, while turning it in the hand reveals another landscape that recalls the same mountain at dusk. Like many of Brandon's pots, the imagery is not painted but discovered—emerging naturally through clay, slip, and firing. Though small in scale, the cup invites slow, attentive use, whether for fine tea, sake, or simply as an object to contemplate.

Brandon Haleによるこの小さな湯のみは、自ら採取した野土をろくろで成形し、白化粧を施した後、薪窯でソーダ焼成されています。炎や灰、ソーダが自然につくり出した景色が、温かな土色や炭色、淡い緑を織り交ぜながら、一点ごとに異なる表情を生み出しています。

片面には朝日に照らされた山並みを思わせる景色が現れ、器を回すと、もう一方には夕暮れの山を思わせる静かな風景が浮かび上がります。こうした情景は描かれたものではなく、土と炎の働きによって自然に生まれたものです。小ぶりながら存在感があり、お茶や日本酒の器としてはもちろん、眺めて楽しめる一点です。
