Meet Peter Dellert

Peter Dellert is a Massachusetts-based woodworker, cabinetmaker, furniture maker, and sculptor with more than forty years of experience working with wood and handmade objects. Before founding his woodworking business in 1983, he worked as a carpenter building houses and earlier apprenticed with a potter in Maine, where he was first introduced to the work of Shoji Hamada and the traditions of Japanese pottery.

That early encounter with Japanese aesthetics continues to inform his work today, particularly the spirit of wabi-sabi: an appreciation for natural materials, irregularity, impermanence, and quiet presence. Whether creating live-edge serving trays from locally fallen hardwoods or sculptural works inspired by everyday tools and forms, Dellert approaches materials with patience, curiosity, and deep respect for their inherent character.

Much of his wood comes from trees harvested locally in Western Massachusetts, often from trees that have fallen naturally. He mills, dries, shapes, and finishes each piece himself, allowing the grain, edge, and history of the wood to remain visible.

Alongside his woodworking practice, Dellert continues an active sculptural career, exhibiting both large-scale outdoor works and smaller mixed-media abstractions in the United States and Japan.

Peter Dellert は、40年以上にわたり木工、家具制作、キャビネット制作、そして彫刻に携わってきたマサチューセッツ州在住の作家です。1983年に自身の工房を始める以前は住宅建築の大工として働き、その前にはメイン州で陶芸家のもとで約2年間修業を行いました。その時期に、濱田庄司をはじめとする日本の陶芸文化に出会いました。

こうした日本美術との出会いは、現在の制作にも深く影響を与えています。特に侘び寂びの精神──自然素材の美しさ、不均衡さ、時間の痕跡、静かな存在感への感覚──は、彼の作品全体に流れています。地元で倒木となった広葉樹から作られるライブエッジのトレイから、日用品や道具に着想を得た彫刻作品に至るまで、Dellert は素材そのものの個性を尊重しながら制作を行っています。

使用される木材の多くは、マサチューセッツ西部で自然に倒れた木々から採取されたものです。製材、乾燥、成形、仕上げに至るまで、すべて自身の手で行い、木目や輪郭、素材の履歴が作品の中に残されます。

木工制作と並行して、Dellert は彫刻家としても活動を続けており、大型屋外作品や小作品をアメリカおよび日本で発表しています。
