Brandon Hale Wood-Fired Serving Tray - Black Slip

This handbuilt serving tray by Brandon Hale is made from wild clay and finished with a layer of black slip, then wood- and salt-fired to develop its deep, atmospheric surface. The elongated rectangular form is gently curved, with softly lifted edges that give the piece both structure and a sense of quiet movement.

The dark surface reveals subtle variation from the firing—charcoal tones, ash deposits, and areas of soft flashing where flame and salt have interacted with the clay. Fine linear textures from the making process remain visible beneath the surface, adding another layer of depth and tactility.

Ideal for serving small dishes—sweets, pickles, or condiments—the tray also works beautifully as a resting place for a cup, incense, or small objects.
